The Conflict Within All of Us

James 1:23-24 Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like a man who looks at his face in a mirror and after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.

Sometimes life can be difficult to handle.  We experience setbacks, disappoints and heartbreaks that leave us dazed and disoriented. I’ve been there, numerous times, trying to figure out what the heck happened.

I like to think that I am a mature Christian and able to handle anything by depending on God’s word to get me through my trials. Truth be told when I found myself facing divorce, I was furious, I found myself repeating phrases like, “how could this happen”, instead of reciting scriptures such as, “he heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.” (Psalm 147:3). When I found myself dealing with breast cancer, I was like Lord, “what is going on and why is this my life?” I should have been remembering Psalm 146:2 that says, “Praise the Lord, O my soul, I will praise the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live”, but I didn’t.James 123-24a

When tragedy happens, it hurts. It’s immediate, it stings, it leaves a bad taste in your mouth and a lump in your throat. It’s easy to forget that you are fearfully and wonderfully made when you’re trying to figure out if you’ll live to see your kids grow old or if you’ll have a second chance at love.

What is it for you?

What’s that thing, issue or situation that has you worried, wondering and doubtful instead of trusting and believing what God says about it?

James 1:23-24 reminds us as Christians that if our words, actions and thoughts about a thing do not align with what God says about it….we’re creating conflict within ourselves. Instead of creating conflict, give peace a chance by remembering that your help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth and he will not let your foot slip-he watches over you.

When I’m feeling doubtful, I turn to Psalm 121. Below is my personal summary of what the scriptures say to me. Maybe it will help you find Peace today:

I keep my eyes on you Lord and I know that you are the source of my help.

You order my steps and your spirit keeps me alert.

Thank you for watching over me and constantly protecting me from harm.

You are my perfect counselor forever. Amen. -@sugawellness 2016
